Garbsen, November 2007 – LaserMicronics GmbH has developed a method for the structuring of MEA films (Membrane Electrode Assembly), which lie at the heart of micro fuel cells. A laser from LPKF Laser & Electronics AG is used to ablate graphite on both sides and cut out the MEA in just one production step; insulation gaps of up to 200 µm are created.
Through this method, the laser enables the production of planar multiple cells with previously unobtainable integration and performance levels. This is a crucial step forward in the use of hydrogen micro fuel cells in portable electronic devices and microsystems.
